urban neglected space i am doing my final year project, in visual communications, on the neglected, derelict, abandoned spaces and microspaces that exist in the dublin cityscape. i am mapping out each potential space (see link below), to benefit from in the form of education, cultural events and community gardening. i am very interested in the biodiversity that can exist in the heart of the city and believe it is very important to communicate. With the recession and global environmental downturn, this project is ambitious to re-appropriate spaces that were once destined for development but that are now sure to be left as terrain vagues. i would greatly appreciate some information on dublin biodiversity and any ideas for positive transformation of these spaces. Also i would like to find out how to access the grove, morehampton rd. to benefit from recent conservation works. Please add any similar spaces in dublin city centre to this map... http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&

Future energy needs Dear Ian Lumley, I’ve been reading the spring issue of An Taisce, which is given over to Ireland’s future energy needs. I’ve looked very carefully at each of the articles, but can find no mention, anywhere, of the nuclear option. This is most strange, since nuclear is such an obvious potential contributor to our energy mix, and also because An Taisce gave it a favourable mention a few years ago. So, what has happened in the meantime? Has An Taisce been warned off mentioning nuclear power? The government has, of course, found it necessary to enact legislation banning the generation of electricity by means of nuclear power, and bodies associated with government are reluctant to discuss the question. I belong to BENE, the organisation promoting a rational debate about the nuclear option. (The acronym means Better Environment with Nuclear Energy.) I or my colleagues would be glad to come and discuss the issue with you, to explain the very real advantages of nuclear energy – advant

AnTaisce Magazine Dear Friends, The new magazine is just brilliant and its theme could not be more apt. The chart on page 13 could be very helpful but is rendered somewhat useless as Fahrenheit degrees have been used. Anybody under 40 are not familiar with Fahrenheit as we are using Celsius since 1971 Submitted By: Richard

Dear Sirs, In this difficult financial times it is still difficult to maintain LISTED PROPERTIES. Would it be reasonable to ask the government to exempt listed properties from residential tax. This would apply to both first and any second homes. The grant system will not exist for the next couple of years. The exemption would cost very little. Brendan O'Connell MRIAI Architect. Hello Who would I contact to notify you about proposed housing development on a site with a national monument? Please see draft area plan - http://www.meath.ie/LocalAuthorities/Publications/PlanningandDevelopmentPublications/TrimElectoralAreaPlanningPublications/ The Enfield area plan includes new planning for housing on the site of this monument. The councils intention to re-zone this green field containing the monument is objected to by the resident's of Johnstown Way Resident's Association insofar as that monument should be preserved as opposed to be a token monument in the middle of a housing development. My name is Deborah Behan, Chair of the Association. Could you please advise how I would raise this issue formally? Thank you Submitted By: Deborah Behan

As a regular walker along the shoreline opposite and downstream of Shannon Airport, I can report that sanitary waste items still litter the foreshore to a visually offensive degree. Is An Taisce satisfied that Aer Rianta has yet installed a satisfactory waste-treatment plant? Submitted By: William J. O'Keeffe

Dear Sir / Madam, An Taisce kindly objected to Planning Application D07A/1641 in the Dun Laoghaire - Rathdown County Council area in 2007. This objection was successful. The applicant's have now resubmitted revised plans (D09A/0116) on 17th February 2009. I would be grateful (as head of Westminster Park Residents Association) if An Taisce could once again oppose this application. Kind regards, Stephen Submitted By: Stephen McGovern
