Archaeology
The Poisoned Chalice
During the past ten years, over 10,000 sites of archaeological potential have been investigated in the Republic of Ireland under licence to the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government (DoEHLG). Approximately 80% of these sites have tested ‘archaeology positive’, a phenomenal number by any standards. To put this number in perspective it should be recalled that in 1989, a mere 101 sites were excavated. Needless to say the vast majority of the 10,000 site investigations were prompted by the rampant development boom.
