The proposal by the ESB to close the Georgian House museum at No 29 Fitzwilliam Street would represent the loss of a thirty-year-old heritage and cultural visitor attraction and educational resource for the city.

The museum was widely welcomed at the time in providing a furnished Georgian townhouse experience such as that which had been established in Bath and Edinburgh for some years, as well as being some atonement of the ESB demolition of the main Lower Fitzwilliam Street terrace in the 1960s.

The project was carried out with the cooperation of the National Museum of Ireland with loaned furniture
and in the appropriate decoration and fit-out of No 29 as a Georgian House experience.

The ESB has achieved a major commercial gain in obtaining permission for the large-scale development now nearing completion, in doubling the level of office space on the ESB site, half of which is for commercial letting, at Fitzwilliam Street Lower. The present Georgian-house a visitor experience should be maintained as a public realm gain within the site.
