Position Information: 
Board Member specialising in Environmental Law

Description of Role:  

The Board member will play an active part on An Taisce’s Board, which provides direction and governance and is answerable to a nationwide Council.

The Board also supports and advises on the day-to-day operations of the organisation.

Board members are required to further the vision and mission of An Taisce according to agreed values and to develop and implement An Taisce’s Strategic Plan sharing responsibility for the prudent fiscal management of the organisation.


Description of Environmental Law Brief:

The Board Member will provide advice to the board on legal matters, especially those pertaining to environmental issues.


Board Terms and Participation:

Attendance is required at Board meetings which take place on the fourth Thursday of every month with Committee meetings taking place at least every two months.


Skills and Expertise:

  • Some familiarity with the requirements of Appropriate Assessment and SEA
  • Familiarity with transposition of EU environmental Directives into Irish law
  • Awareness of where legal responsibilities lie for various environmental sectors (water, air, forestry, soils, etc.)
  • Ability to assess environmental implications of Planning projects, programmes and policies.
  • Understanding of the community and voluntary sector
  • Strong communication and listening skills

 
Industry Experience:

  • A legal qualification, preferably with a specialism in environmental law or a closely related field.
  • Previous experience in environmental litigation and work with NGOs would be optimal.


Time per Month:

Under 16 hours

Description of Governance Brief:

The Board Member will serve as Chair of the organisation’s Governance and Risk Committee, providing guidance to the Board on all matters relating to regulatory and legal compliance.


Board Terms and Participation:

Attendance is required at Board meetings which take place on the fourth Thursday of every month with  Committee meetings taking place at least every two months.


Skills and Expertise:

  • Familiarity with the Charities Regulator’s Governance Code
  • An interest in the natural and/or built environment, climate change and biodiversity.
  • Understanding of the community and voluntary sector
  • Strong communication and listening skills


Industry Experience:

  • Minimum five years’ professional experience in a governance role in the private, non-profit or public sector


Time per Month:

Under 16 hours

Description of PR Brief:

The Board Member will provide guidance and input on communications with members,  stakeholders and the general public. S/he will work with various other committees and departments to ensure the consistent delivery of An Taisce’s messages and content.


Board Terms and Participation:

Attendance is required at Board meetings which take place on the fourth Thursday of every month with  Committee meetings taking place at least every two months.


Skills and Expertise:

  • Creativity and ability to come up with fresh ideas and solutions to communications and public relations challenges
  • Experience of strategic planning and service development
  • An interest in the natural and/or built environment, climate change and biodiversity.
  • Understanding of the community and voluntary sector
  • Strong communication and listening skills


Industry Experience:

  • Minimum five years’ professional experience in a communications or PR role in the private, non-profit or public sector


Time per Month:

Under 16 hours
