Submission to Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine’s Statement of Strategy 2021-2024

An Taisce was invited by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine to make a submission to help inform the Department's Statement of Strategy for 2021-2024.
In our submission, we argue that the Department’s strategy for the coming four years should integrate the following overarching principles:
  • The health and wellbeing of both people and planet;
  • Nature and reversing the biodiversity loss emergency;
  • The climate emergency, the need to mitigate greenhouse gases, the 2020 Programme for Government commitment 7% annual reduction of greenhouse gases;
  • Diversification to meet the threats and opportunities of a more complex future;
  • A Just Transition to support the change needed.
Our submission covers the climate impact of agriculture, human health impacts including ammonia air pollution, the current biodiversity loss crisis, an in-depth look at carbon sequestration in grasslands, use of peat in horticulture, agricultural diversification, problems with ongoing dairy expansion, FoodWise 2025 and the upcoming AgriFood 2030 strategy, aquaculture and fisheries, marine spatial planning, and forestry.
