Youghal is one of Ireland's finest historic towns retaining significant portions of its medieval defensive walls. The walls are extensively damaged and suffering from major conservation problems with a section on the elevated western side of the town collapsing in 2009 leaving its core masonry exposed. The repair of damage to the wall should be considered a national priority. The walls are of signifcant historic importance and require conservation works to prevent further deterioration.
