However, it is under threat of demolition or its future sustained use is in doubt. Liberty Hall was constructed between 1961 and 1965 and stands at sixteen storeys (59m). It was the tallest building in Ireland until the Cork County Hall was constructed in 1968. The building originally had non- reflective glass but this was replaced with a reflective glass after a car bomb in 1974. In 2006 SIPTU, who occupy the building, announced it was seeking to demolish the building and later put forward a proposal for a twenty-two storey (100m) structure on the same site. However, An Bord Pleanála refused to grant permission for the proposal in 2012 as it was considered it would be "unacceptably dominant in the city".
