An Taisce was invited by the Department of Transport to make a submission to help inform the Department's Statement of Strategy for 2021-2023.

In our submission, we highlight the implementation failures of the Smarter Travel policy to date and discuss the urgent need to move away from private car use towards multi-modal travel focused on public transport, cycling and walking. We outline the benefits of sustainable, active travel to both people and planet, including to climate mitigation, air quality, human health and wellbeing, and offer numerous suggestions for creating a modal shift. These include fiscal measures; institutional changes at local authority and national levels, infrastructure improvements, legislative changes, safety improvements, greenway expansion, and changes to tourism models. We also discuss the future of ports, shipping, and aviation.
