A statement of An Taisce’s current position on energy, acknowledging that the fast changing circumstances of fluctuating demand and technological development may require frequent review of any policy. Summer 2016.
Energy and climate change are the defining challenges of our time. We are currently experiencing a global human-made climate and resource crisis which, without overstating it, places humanity at a crossroads. The scientific evidence is clear. In order to avoid the worst effects of climate change, at least 80% of known global fossil fuel reserves must remain in the ground, and we must rapidly transition to secure, affordable and decarbonised energy system within just a few short decades. For Ireland, the sheer scale of this challenge is unprecedented and requires that we urgently focus resources and mobilise more radical approaches for achieving environmental and social policy objectives.
