Meet An Taisce member and urban grower, Michael!

Michael lives in Cork City and grows vegetables and herbs in his back garden. He also has trees and shrubs.

When Michael and his partner, Jo, first viewed their house they were attracted by the raised beds in the garden. For the couple, striking the balance between growing food, planting saplings and creating a functional space in a small urban garden was important.

They’ve made good use of the garden over the last six years, growing peas, potatoes, kale, broccoli, and berries!

For Michael the best thing about growing is the pleasure of it. It’s the hour spent, the connection, getting the fingers dirty, being more connected with everything. it’s direct, it’s natural.

Michael is a member of An Taisce because he cares about built heritage, nature, ensuring Cork is a liveable city, and cycling. Michael believes when we slow down we become more aware of nature and our environment, and better understand our responsibility to protect it.
