National Heritage Week

National Heritage Week runs from Saturday 14th to Sunday the 22nd of August. This year An Taisce is marking the week with all things compost!

Composter Competition

On Monday 16th we are launching our Heritage Week with a Composter Competition, thanks to the generous support of Quickcrop. The prize is a JK 125 Joraform Composter worth €455! To enter just head over to our Instagram page from Monday.

Quickcrop is an Irish, online gardening and composting store that is passionate about making vegetable growing easy and accessible for everyone.

Compost for Nature

On Tuesday 17th we are holding an online Composting 101 event with Nuala Madigan from the Irish Peatland Conservation Council and Dr. Compost, Craig Benton, and launching our brand new Compost for Nature guide. We can’t wait to share it with you. Book your tickets here.

We have a lot of work to do to move away from the use of peat-compost. Our peatlands and bogs need our support. Learning about composting is a great start.

Booterstown Nature Reserve

Sunflower Power

An Taisce member, Roisin Hussey, is opening up her garden and inviting people to pick sunflowers at the Heath, just outside Portlaoise on Saturday, 21st and Sunday, 22nd of August. All proceeds will go to Portlaoise Parish Services Centre and Laois Offaly Families for Autism.

Suggested donation is €5 for 5 flowers, please bring your own scissors or secateurs. Sessions at 11am - 12:30pm, 12.30pm - 2pm, 2pm- 3.30pm and 3.30pm - 5pm.

The Future is Peat-Free

Holding as much as 10 times the carbon per hectare than other ecosystems, peatlands can become devastating greenhouse gas emitters when disturbed. It's time to talk to gardening retailers and suppliers. Steps need to be taken to remove peat from horticulture and gardening products.
Grattan Hill Community Orchard - Cork City

The idea of a Community Orchard started when Michael and his neighbors started meeting on a common grassy, sloped area located on their street. They would be out with the kids or going for a walk and discussions of the space’s potential emerged.
Orchard Planning Time

Now is the time to plan for planting apples this autumn. Apple trees have flowers for pollinators, and fruit for people and wildlife. They suit greens in housing estates, parks, gardens and farms.
Meet Niall

Niall lives in Bayside, Dublin and helps grow a diverse range of crops at the Bayside Community Orchard. The Bayside Community Orchard is a community-led initiative through which a small, little-used green area in the middle of a housing estate was transformed into a wonderful amenity for the local community.
Meet Caroline

Meet An Taisce member and community grower, Caroline! Caroline lives in Kilflynn, Co. Kerry and shares a piece of land with two other households, growing a variety of vegetables and fruits. It has been a learning experience to say the least, she reveals.
Composting Programme in Killeen National School

In September 2020 Eoin joined Killeen National School as a Special Needs Assistant. He was asked to help with the school’s outdoor education class. With a background in gardening, so he said no problem. He saw the school compost bin and said, right I'll research composting and will work on that.

For years, the garden and landscape industry has been selling us peat moss as “compost.” In reality, this is peat-moss that is nutrient-poor and bad for our peatlands. The good news is that there is another more sustainable way to nurture soil health AND reduce waste - composting!
Meet Michael

Meet An Taisce member and urban grower, Michael! Michael lives in Cork City and grows vegetables and herbs in his back garden. He also has trees and shrubs. For Michael the best thing about growing is the pleasure of it. It’s the hour spent, the connection, getting the fingers dirty, being more connected with everything. it’s direct, it’s natural.
Meet Zeina

Meet An Taisce member and grower, Zeina! Zeina lives in Clonskeagh and has a small, south-facing garden. Growing up, Zeina was well acquainted with harvesting and weeding through her father, an agricultural engineer. Zeina began growing herself after her father visited, and suggested she and her partner try tomatoes.
Let's Talk About Bees

Contrary to popular belief, it is actually our wild bees (not honeybees) that are responsible for most pollination. Unfortunately one-third of our 98 wild bee species are at risk of extinction. This is because we have drastically reduced the amount of food (flowers) and safe nesting sites in our landscapes.
